Small Modifications to my WordPress Installation

I’ve modified my installation of WordPress to:
* show the RSS2 feed for the selected category (rather than the site feed)
* show the category name in the RSS2 feed (in a way similar to how the site’s HTML title is shown (as seen in the browser window)) but with a separator that validates in RSS (that funny little chevron like thing isn’t allowed in an RSS2 title)

This represents a significant usability improvement for any of you who want to filter out the noise on my weblog. It’ll also allow me to be a little less cautious about some of the stuff I write about because you can turn it off without turning off the whole site.

New Look

I’ve changed the look of the weblog. If you see a greenish header to the site (the default WordPress page) then you are looking at the old version. You’ll need to reload the css style sheet (and that’s done by holding down the shift key and reloading the page, sometimes a couple of times).

I’ve taken the second place style by “Hadley Wickham”: from “Alex Kings’s”: “WordPress CSS Style Competition”: and tweaked it a bit (lost the image of a pen, indented the text a bit, spaced the link lists, and modified the display of comments).

I think the new look is much better than the old — thank you Hadley.

Update: well, except for this strange bug. That I’ve fixed. So…

First Post, and it is About Comment Spam

I installed WordPress over the weekend. I’m still trying to get this weblog and my thoughts about what I might do with it organised. I left a temporary message in the blog. Apparently that was enough to be noticed.

Between 8:10 and 8:33 this morning I got 9 comment spams. The interesting bit is that the comments were for a non-existent post. The default in WordPress is to allow comments. I’m assuming there is a bit of a hole here. No matter, I’ve changed the default to no-comments on posts. There’s been no spam since.

I’m allowing (moderated) comments to this post. Maybe I’ll get some honest comments, maybe I’ll get a ton of spam. This is going to be the determining factor to whether I allow comments at all.

I suppose the same thing will hold for trackbacks.
